Upping the ante

In a preemptive strike on my usual resolutions for the new year — read more, listen to new music, watch TV less — our household (Luca included) has decided that we won’t immediately have our one-and-only television repaired for some months to come. The set refused to start up the other evening, and so it will remain for the time being.

Truth be told, we were only really watching Italian soccer on the weekends, and, with Juve in Serie B this season, where’s the fun in that?

So, that’s it. If suddenly I give you a papier mâché model of the Chrysler building, complete with inlaid tin foil work, you’ll understand.

“Truth be told …” Yeah right! The only reason why you aren’t watching TV is because you are watching it all later on your ipod while your family is sleeping. You’re an addict just like the rest of us.

How do you remove pesky comments from these blog things anyway?

Watching stuff on an iPod, on your own terms (what you want, when you want, how, where, etc), isn’t really “watching TV” anymore is it?

I’ll admit there’s TV content I do “consume”, HBO and Showtime programs, some British serials, even Lost and Studio 60, but I think if I were forced to watch them on TV, at 9pm on Wednesday evening, or worse, with commercials every 10 mintues, I’d easily give them a pass without a second thought.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I hardly watched any tv throughout 2006. I just won’t/can’t interrupt my other activities to sit on the couch at a specific time and date. This past year I ended up download 90% of what I watch. Bittorrent through RSS for 24 and LOST (as well as Earl, Gene Simmons and Mythbusters which I can’t resist) and I often watch a fair amount of independently produced IPTV that I get automatically delivered through iTunes. My new years resolution is to admit that we don’t need cable any more and finally cancel it. Next we will work on getting rid of the land-line…
